English name:<\/strong>\u00a0Pumpkin<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family:<\/strong> Cucurbitaceae<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botanical characteristic:<\/strong> An annual climbing or climbing plant, with distinctive pubescence, branched tendrils. The leaves are petiolate, broadly ovate, five-lobed. Male flowers are in axillary umbellate clusters, female flowers occur singly, pedicels are 5-edged. The crown is 7 \u2013 10 cm wide, deep yellow in colour. It flowers from June to September. The fruit is a large round to cylindrical berry, yellow or green in colour with flat white seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distribution:<\/strong> It comes from North America. It occurs worldwide in many varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drug<\/strong>: Cucurbitae semen<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvesting method:<\/strong> Pumpkin seeds are harvested at maturity from July to September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drying:<\/strong> The seeds are dried naturally in the air in thin layers and in electric dryers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Active substances:<\/strong> Pumpkin seeds contain fatty oil, a high proportion of phytosterols, especially delta-7-sterol. Vitamin E, essential amino acids, the amino acid cornbitin, trace elements such as selenium, manganese, copper and zinc are present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uses:<\/strong> Pumpkin seeds and the oil pressed from them are used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign enlargement of the prostate gland).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
